Trees often send out new shoots from what appeared to be bare wood.

The growth comes from buds lying dormant in the bark or trunk, waiting for a signal from within the tree that they are needed.

The buds come to life when the tree faces stress or injury.  They ensure its survival or renewal, its continuity and lineage.
